DESCRIPTION

Of breathtaking visual beauty, their velvety-textured leaves blend dark green tones with intense, bright purples. For this reason, Calatheas are some of the favourite plants to decorate millions of homes.

Scientific name: Calathea spp.

Curiosities: The foliage of calatheas and their cousins of the genus Marantas move their leaves upwards during the night and downwards during the day, which makes them also known as prayer plants, prayer plant, that happens especially and most visibly with Calathea lancifolia, Maranta leuconeura and Maranta amabilis 'mint'. CARE

Temperature: It grows well in an environment between 18º to 24 °C.

Light: It needs to be placed in a well-lit area, but never in direct sunlight.

Watering: Spray 2 times a week or more, and 1 in winter, they appreciate capillary watering. It requires a fairly humid environment.

Cultivation: A substrate rich in nutrients and composed of peat and/or mulch will help to retain the humidity necessary for its correct growth. A liquid fertiliser is recommended every 15 days in spring and summer.

Transplanting: Slow growing, it needs to be transplanted when it is observed that its size exceeds the pot.
